Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) is a coaching program that helps you obtain the tools you need to recover from trauma. SPR is for children and adults of all ages. SPR is intervention for people who have gone through, or are going through loss, natural disaster, traumatic event or need to overcome an emotional event.

All survivors making initial contact, or returning after a break in services.

Promoting Positive Activities

For individuals of all ages. To help survivors plan and engage in positive, pleasurable, and meaningful activities to improve their mood and help them regain a sense of control.

Promoting Helpful Thinking

If you struggle with distressing disaster-related thoughts or negative emotions this section will help you identify those thoughts and learn new skills to deal with them. Geared for all ages.

Building Problem-Solving Skills

Help survivors to prioritize and solve difficulties or problems.

Managing Reactions

Learn new strategies to deal with reactions to stressful situations. These skills help to calm upsetting physical and emotional reactions.

Rebuilding Healthy Social Connections

Social support from family, friends, and community members enhances recovery after a disaster by helping survivors meet their emotional and practical needs.

Skills for Psychological Recovery is an evidence-informed modular approach to help children, adolescents, adults and families in the weeks and months following disaster and trauma.
The principles and techniques of SPR meet four basic standards:

  1. Consistent with research evidence on risk and resilience following trauma.

  2. Applicable and practical in field settings.

  3. Appropriate for developmental levels across the lifespan.

  4. ​Culturally informed.
